The relationship between the spiritual father and the spiritual child should be of spiritual nature and all our relations and conversations are supposed to be focused on spiritual matters. What may annoy or hurt the spiritual father most is disobedience, and what delights him most is obedience. We are not supposed to be afraid of our spiritual father as if he were some despot, but we are also not advised to have a too loose relation to him. Instead, it should be much like the relation we have towards an icon as the spiritual father himself is an icon of Christ. We should treat him in an appropriate way. When you stand before an icon, you certainly do not speak nonsense and have unreasonable requirements, or questions out of the context, but simply you love the saint on the icon and you have awe towards him/her. Everything that God created is good and was created in order to serve man. But when the sin and the disobedience of man towards God appeared, the blessed unity between him and his Creator was ruined. It was natural for the man to be banished i.e. to be excluded from God’s closeness. That is why man eternally craves to be brought back again to the unity with God. And the world as it is, is too narrow and too hellish to fulfill that unity, in the way that God Himself announced to Abba Arsenij, when he asked Him how to save himself, he heard a voice answering: “Arsenij, run away from people (the world) and you will be saved”.         (more…)
