1. 1. Father Gavril, what is the difference of being a monk in a monastery in Australia, compared to being a monk in a monastery in Macedonia?

There is a big difference. Firstly, let us start from the fact that Macedonia is a biblical land which has had Christianity from its very beginning. Apostle Paul was the first preacher in Macedonia, and not only Apostle Paul but many other Apostles of Christ were missionaries in our Macedonia. For example, the first summoned Apostle Andrej was the first organiser of the Macedonian Church and appointed several Apostles as Bishops in the Macedonian cities. And let us not forget the most Holy Theotocos, Mother of God, who set her foot on Macedonia and so blessed it. And from that time till today in Macedonia there has been a continuous Orthodox Christian legacy. (more…)

1. Father Gabriel, on 26 January 2006, along with His Eminence Peter, Metropolitan of Prespa and Pelagonia and Administrator of Australia and New Zealand, you arrived in Australia as a cleric of the Macedonian Orthodox Diocese of Australia and New Zealand. Could you, please, tell us something about yourself… Let us begin with your native town.

- I was born in Shtip. There I graduated from the informatics vocational high school. Afterwards, in 1992, I enrolled at the faculty of Theology in Skopje and graduated from it. In the course of my studies I met my spiritual father, Bishop Nahum, who, being a Hagiorite monk (of mt. Athos, “the Holy mountain”), was a model of monasticism to us in those years of mass spiritual awakening – mostly among the young people – in Macedonia. I used to visit his monasteries frequently and learned about the essence of monasticism, the monastic mode of life in stillness, the unceasing Jesus prayer. - Роден сум во Штип. Гимназија, со насока информатика, завршив во Штип. Потоа, во 1992 година, се запишав на Теолошкиот факултет во Скопје, кој подоцна го завршив. За време на моето студирање се запознав со мојот духовен отец, Владиката Наум, кој како светогорски монах во тие години на помасовно духовно будење (претежно кај младите луѓе) во Македонија ни беше образец за монаштвото. - Could you, please, highlight for us some remarkable moments from your missionary activity.

There are several different remarkable moments in the form of miracles that happened during my missionary activities that I wanted to share with the readers here:

1)    It was at the beginning of my mission in Solo City-Central Java Province that this event occurred. A Muslim convert, Mr Sadrach Temon Sularso, lived in a village few kilometers away from the city of Solo.  He was a poor farmer, so that he had to do anything in order to add something into his family income. That day he was trying to dig sands located in the ground  at the backyard of his house from morning to over midday. (more…)

1) Тоа беше на почетокот на мојата мисија во градот Соло, покраина Централна Јава, кога се случи овој настан. Господинот Садрах Темон Суларсо, покрстен муслиман, живее во село на неколку километри од Соло. Тој е сиромашен земјоделец, така што мора да работи сè за да го издржува семејството. (more…)

1) Mission in Indonesia

After I finished my study in Korea, I went to Greece, and from Greece I went to study in the United States in America. Upon the completion of my study in the USA, I was ordained by Metropolitan Maximos of Pittsburgh and I returned back to Indonesia to start my mission work in Indonesia  that is still ongoing. There was no native Orthodox Church in Indonesia before I came to start this mission. Slowly the Church is growing even though not without difficulties and upheavals. Due to the difficulties and upheavals that I experienced in establishing the Orthodox Church in Indonesia, by the leading hands of the Holy Spirit finally I was brought under the omophorion of Metropolitan Hilarion of the Russian Orthjodox Church Outside of Russia to date.  To God be the Glory. Мисијата во Индонезија

Откако го завршив школувањето во Кореја, заминав во Грција, а оттаму – на студии во САД. По дипломирањето, бев ракоположен од Митрополитот на Питсбург Максимос и се вратив во Индонезија, започнувајќи ја мисионерската работа во Индонезија која сè уште трае. Немаше домородна Православна Црква во Индонезија пред јас да дојдам да ја започнам оваа мисија. Црквата полека расте, иако не без потешкотии и немири. Заради потешкотиите и немирите што ги доживеав при основањето на Православната Црква во Индонезија, воден од Светиот Дух, конечно бев примен под омофорот на Митрополитот Иларион од Руската Задгранична Православна Црква. Слава Му на Бог.

My Discovery of Orthodoxy in Korea

To shorten my story, finally I was able to study in this evangelical Protestant Seminary in Seoul, Korea. But my question about the original eastern Christianity of Christ’s Apostles, still haunted my mind. I have been praying to God to guide me to find this original Church.

Finally God answered my prayer toward the end of my schooling in Korea, having been there for almost 5 years. One day I went to the biggest book store in Seoul at that time. Everything was written in Korean, but one book written in English caught my attention. It was the well-known book of Bishop Kallistos Ware: “The Orthodox Church”. I did not know what “Orthodox Church” was, I thought it was a new cult from America. But I bought the book, and upon the completion of my reading I was so joyful that at last I found the Church I have been praying for. (more…)

Го откривам Православието во Кореја

Да ја скратам приказната, најпосле можев да студирам на оваа евангелистичка протестантска семинарија во Сеул, Јужна Кореја. Но, прашањето околу првобитното источно христијанство на Христовите Апостоли сè уште ми се вртеше во умот. Му се молев на Бог да ме води за да ја најдам оваа првобитна Црква.

Конечно Бог одговори на мојата молитва кон крајот на моето школување во Кореја, а таму се задржав скоро пет години. Еден ден отидов во најголемата книжарница во Сеул во тоа време. Сè беше напишано на корејски, но една книга на англиски ми го привлече вниманието. Тоа беше познатата книга на Владиката Калист Вер „Православната Црква“. Не знаев што е тоа „Православна Црква“, мислев дека се работи за нов култ од Америка. Но, ја купив книгата и откако завршив со читањето, бев толку многу среќен дека конечно ја најдов Црквата за која се молев. (more…)
