On 19 July 1903, the discovery of the relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov, was attended by many of the clergy along side with thousands of worshipers, including royalty, holy Tsar Nicholas II, who was one of the bearers of the relics in procession. Saint Seraphim had foretold that on that day this king will come to Sarov and he had left a  letter for Tsar Nikolaj. The contents of the letter were read by the Tsar and no one else knows what was written in it.  For the life of St. Seraphim, see January 15 (according to the new calendar).

“The goal in our life is to be perfect and sanctified. It is to show that we are the children of God and the inheritors of the Heavenly Kingdom. But we should be careful not to be deprived from the next life because of our present one. It should not happen that as a result of our earthly care and restlessness we neglect the goal in our life.”

                                                                             Saint Nektarios

The time Saint Nektarios was born and lived in is a so called dark age of Orthodoxy. It is the period after the disintegration of the glorious Orthodox Roman Empire and the many-century long heterodox Turkish slavery on the one hand and the deliberately imposed spiritual slavery from the western sterile scholastic theologian thought on the other hand. During his life he went through the three levels of spiritual life: purifying the heart, enlightening the mind and sanctifying the whole personality, he went through the three levels of contemplation of God; the practical or the natural, the theoretic or contemplative and pure theology. The Saint actualized the fullness of the baptizing grace inside him and the divine energies, transferring them to us through his prayers and deeds, while his word itself, transformed and purified in his heart, gained strength and became a word with power and God’s Word – Theology.

The life and acts of Saint Silouan remained uncovered for many people until the end of his life on earth and until his blessed appearance in front of God, for Whom he cried all his life, like the fallen Adam, yearning for Him and searching Him in tears. It is the expression of his deep humility, although his cognition and communion with God was very close and personal as with a friend.

His life, in many ways, resembles us who belong to Christ and live in this modern society of temptations and atheism. That is why we can freely say that Saint Silouan is the most authentic monk of present times and the forerunner of the new wave of “modern” monasticism. (more…)
