Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil one – we admit that we are helpless, weak and unable to endure the temptations and we pray to God to deliver us from them. In contrary, when we cause temptations we show pride. Those, the humble ones in heart, are dear to God, but He is disgusted from the proud ones. It is the same as when we are very passionate of something and we want it at any cost, without having to check whether it is according to God’s will.
We cannot avoid temptations, because we live in an evil world (Gal. 1.4), away from God, thus we pray to God for the temptations to avoid us and to give us strength and humbleness to win those temptations we already have. Any temptation is from the evil by God’s permission. God is Almighty and He knows our strength and doesn’t allow any temptation beyond our powers. Each experience is given to us to test our love for God and our loved ones. So every experience can be passed, but we must act according to God’s commandments. If we do the opposite of that, then we sin.
God allows those who are strong enough, as Job, to further strengthen, establish the good deeds and deificate and those temptations in our everyday life. Most of the time, when we are given a temptation, we begin to complain, to blame others … but the Holy Fathers say: Lord, take the temptation from us and who will be saved. That means we need to approach strongly to temptations. Thus, when we win temptations with God’s grace, we strengthen our blessing and glorify God. Holy Fathers advise us not to complain about the temptations, but to accept them with joy, because through them we can read our hearts. We live in a fake world in where (my ego) I am the king and my kingdom is my passions in my heart that we are more slaves to them than they are passions to us. When temptation hits us, it weakens our kingdom. The smart ones can realize the passions in their heart and immediately confess them and are freed of them. If someone insults me or says something wrong to me then I will have many bad thoughts and I will realize that I am proud, angry, evil, vengfull etc. If something has been stolen from me, and I get mad, that means I am passionate towards this thing and I am a citizen of earth and not heaven. When a temptation occurs, we should accept it with joy. That means it is time for reading and purifying my heart, as well as wakening my sleeping conscience.
The prayer, deliver us from evil one – God indicates who our enemy is and where all our temptations come from. They are not from other people, but from the devil, and if we should be angry and argue with someone, it should be with the devil.
The English translation of the Lord’s Prayer has mainly two translations where one is translated as evil, and the other as the evil one. The correct translation is the evil one because the word one precisely indicates who he is and that he is someone specific and not just someone imaginary. That is the devil, the father of lies.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and glory - The prayer ends with doxology, the priest says it often in church and it means that we recognize God as our Creator, Almighty God, King and Empire, and we love Him and want to live according to Him, because without Him we can do nothing. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (John: 15:5)
